About Ken
Hi, my name is Ken Bignell. I am an Ontario Certified Teacher and have been teaching in a classroom for 19 years. I recently decided to step back from full time teaching to focus my attention on helping students reach their full potential in a more personalized learning environment. My dream is to see all students succeed. Over my years as a teacher, I’ve seen the struggles that students often face because they have difficulties understanding their assigned tasks. This is one of the main reasons that I am working towards becoming an Orton Gillingham Associate. Teaching phonics, letter sounds, and letter formation help formulate language acquisition and ultimately provide students with increased fluency and understanding of language.
In addition to supporting your child's classroom teacher, I will work with your child to create a private tutoring support plan. This plan will include classwork support, study skills, test/exam preparation, and overall organizational skills for classroom success. All children can succeed! I'm here to modify and tailor a learning plan that will help them achieve their goals. Learning can be enjoyable through hands-on activities and applying learning to real-life or relevant situations. Fun learning = easier to learn = increased success = greater buy-in for your child=happier child & parent.
As a teacher, it’s my job to understand the needs of my learners and adapt my teaching techniques and styles to meet their needs. I seek to build a trusting relationship with students to facilitate open and honest communication about their academics. My approach will help them to learn, understand, and apply academic concepts. Students should be challenged and stretched in their critical thinking by extending these skills to real life experiences and my goal is to teach a skillset that is transferable to other areas of learning.
